B.media Layout Client

B.media Layout is an interface to the B.media database and Content Storage Server that gives the User access to data and Assets from within Adobe InDesign or QuarkXPress. Users can select and place individual Attributes or Assets, they can paginate Blocks using Block Templates or Formatted Blocks, or create entire pages using Whiteboards.

Content Manager

The fastest way to create a new page is to use Whiteboards. Once a merchandiser, product manager, or other User creates a Whiteboard in the Content Manager, a designer working in B.media Layout can generate a document just by clicking "Create". The basic layout of the page(s) is automatically done in the page layout application, with all content linked to the B.media database. Each block is imported into the page layout program as a "Group", and the designer can manipulate all elements in the page - linked or not - as normal.

The B.media Layout client has a bidirectional link between B.media and the page layout application. The blue underlining in the document indicates that the text is linked to a B.media Attribute. Within a single text box, strings of text may be linked to different B.media Attributes. For instance, the descriptive copy for a product might be linked to several lines of text, the product dimensions to different text, and price information to still more text, all within the same InDesign or Quark text box.

If information - such as price - is changed in B.media, the page is automatically updated with that value. In fact, the designer (with proper permissions) may update all Attributes at once, all instances of a single Attribute, or just a single Attribute value. The Content Usage tool allows the designer to view any Asset or Attribute Links that need to be updated. The Link Inspector tool allows the designer to view the differences between what is in the document and what is in the database, and update specific links (in either direction) as desired.

Formatted Blocks

Once the designer has laid out and formatted new Blocks, he can import them as Formatted Blocks to be re-used in other publications. Once the entire page is laid out, the designer can save the document into B.media as its own Asset, with its own permissions and Attributes. During the review process the designer can version the document. At the same time for each version, the designer can create a PDF Rendition on import that other Users in the workflow can review.
